This makes things very clear, particularly in terms of how therapy does not and cannot replace sacraments!  Totally different ballgame indeed!  I think folks who might call therapists the new priests are either A) religious people lamenting the loss of the sacramental worldview that used to be more common, or B) secular/atheist people who don't understand what a sacramental worldview even is (and probably never have!).

So to group A, therapy feels like capitulating to that loss of sacramental understanding that has permeated Western culture, and to group B, sacraments aren't seen as "doing anything" anyway, and so the development of therapy is seen as an "advancement" (just like stupid narratives about how ancient Greeks made up Zeus because they didn't understand what lightning was, since ancient people were SO much dumber than us, for example...)

I liked that you lay out for the people in Group A how we can have a space for both religion and therapy in our lives, and that they're not mutually exclusive, any more than religion and science. I would strongly agree!  I don't think pretending that we need to pick one does anyone any favours, imho.

Very well said, and from the heart, I can tell. Great piece.
