In fact, in the book 'Mules and Men', Zora Neale Hurston studied with lots of folk healers / method masters during the 30s, which is very recent. Oh absolutely! Yeah the rise of Neo shamanism is fascinating imo. Personally I have different religious beliefs ahaha but I think a lot of their stuff is worthwhile.
I don't particularly see psychotropics as medicinal. Or rather not to judge, but I don't come from a cultural background where journeywork and channeling involve the use of drugs at all.
I mean I've run into people who practice journeywork and channeling, which are techniques similar to shamanism in the Americas, within Chinese folk religion. They live a very clean lifestyle, vegetarian for example. The same is true of American folk religion's healers and root doctors.
Work from home is one of the best solutions for this type. I think you should expand on what you mean by shaman, though. Based on your brief definition, any job that doesn’t take all of your energy.
The trades and manufacturing can be great for that btw. Depends on what you do and how you do it. I read your piece on the trades and I think your field of vision is narrow. I’ve known people who have very simple jobs where they can meditate or listen to audiobooks all day, and make relatively decent money. No meetings, no emails. I used to do this myself and I pondered the mysteries of the world and consumed so many audiobooks that changed the trajectory of my life.
Everyone is different though, and we have to find our own way.
